At what point in canon is your character being brought in? Post Season 2 – Exit Wounds

Background:
Jack was born in the 51st Century and grew up on the Boeshane Peninsula with his family, including his brother Gray. Aliens invaded one day and his brother went missing, something he blames himself for. After this his history becomes murky and difficult to define, at least in part due to his work with the Time Agency. However he left the Time Agency when he discovered that they had erased two years of his memories.

At this point he became a rather slick conman, using his knowledge of history to ensure he never had to actually deliver on his deals. It was during one of these scams that he met the Doctor and Rose. However the piece of ‘space junk’ he was using as bait was not empty as he’d presumed but instead was full of nanogenes, the release of which threatened the entire population of Earth. In helping to avert the results of his mistake, he took onboard his ship a German bomb. The Doctor and Rose rescued him and he travelled with them.

This lasted until Satellite 5 and the attack by the Daleks. Jack was killed by the Daleks but brought back to life by Rose who held the power of the TARDIS within her. The Doctor and Rose left without him and he was stranded. In an attempt to find the Doctor, Jack used a Vortex Manipulator he had been issued with when a Time Agent. However instead of ending up in the 21st Century, he missed and ended up in 1869. He discovered the results of what Rose had done in 1892 when he was shot and ‘woke up’ again.

During the subsequent years, he remained in Cardiff, knowing that eventually the Doctor would return to the rift to refuel the TARDIS. He needed to find the Doctor to get answers for what had been done to him and because he hoped that the Doctor would be able to fix him. During this time, he was captured by Torchwood and ended up working for them, initially unwillingly but eventually with a reasonable amount of equanimity. He became the leader of Torchwood 3 in 2000 when the then-leader killed himself and the rest of the team.

Jack then recruited Toshiko Sato, Owen Harper, Ianto Jones and Suzie Costello and ran Torchwood the way he thought the Doctor would want him to. He later recruited Constable Gwen Cooper after Suzie Costello shot herself after coming under the influence of the Resurrection Glove (or Risen Mitten as Ianto likes to call it).

After facing the embodiment of death, Abaddon, and surviving, Jack saw that the Doctor had returned. He managed to hitch a ride and his nature forced the TARDIS to the year 100 trillion where Jack, the Doctor and Martha encountered the last of the human race and a kindly old Professor named Yana. Yana was actually the Master and he stole the Doctor’s TARDIS and went back to the 21st Century where as Harold Saxon, he became Prime Minister and enacted his plan to take over the world. Jack spent a year as the Master’s prisoner and subject to his psychopathy before the Doctor was able to defeat the Master. The ruin of the Master’s plan reversed time and the year that had occurred was wiped out. Jack then chose to return to Cardiff and his team.

Once there he encountered an old friend and lover, Captain John Hart, who told him as he was leaving that he’d found Gray, Jack’s brother. Jack put this information out of his mind for the large part, picking up where he left off for the most part. This included his relationship with Ianto, which became more serious, in part because of the confidence Ianto had gained during Jack’s absence.

Things came to head for Jack when John Hart returned and captured him. This was not his choice; he had been forced to do so by Gray. Gray then forced John to bury Jack alive in the year AD27. Jack lay buried, dying and returning again and again until he was discovered by Torchwood agents in 1901 whereupon he was placed in cryopreservation until the present day. When he woke again, he was able to find Gray and he chloroformed him and placed him in cryopreservation but not before Gray shot and killed Tosh, forced an accident that resulted in Owen’s death and did untold damage to Cardiff. Jack blames himself for this and is hanging onto what remains of his team more tightly as a result.

Personality: Flirt... Jack would flirt with anything that moves and probably a fair few things that don’t. It’s sort of his default mode. The flirty smiles and comments are second nature to him and he uses them as a means to charm, to get information, as a means of disarming people and even as a weapon every now and then. But this is merely the façade to a far more complex man. Jack can also be funny, witty, caring, kind, sad, hurt, lonely, uncaring, reckless, dark and completely ruthless. Some of these things he lets people see, others he hides behind the walls he’s built over the years. He’s seen too many things, done too many things, watched too many people die and died far too many times himself to ever be the man he once was and now the only way he can survive is to hide himself. He sometimes risks becoming inhuman by doing this and relies on his team to keep him from that. He flirts with Gwen but carries on a semi-serious relationship with Ianto Jones.

Appearance: Jack is a handsome man with a smile that is charming and sometimes mischievous. He has blue eyes and wears his hair in a short back and sides, semi-militaristic style. He wears what Owen once termed ‘period military’, specifically the uniform and greatcoat of a World War Two RAF officer, though he has in the past worn far more casual clothing. He also carries a World War Two Webley revolver. He also possesses evolved pheromones that make him naturally nice-smelling and attractive to others.

Likes: Flirting, Ianto’s coffee, Ianto, the Doctor, Rose, playing games
Dislikes: Paperwork, cruelty, Torchwood 1 (when it existed), cybermen, daleks
